San Diego, California. October, 2021.

Fondo de Cultura Económica is one of the most important Mexican publishers and has its US headquarters in San Diego. The objective of this project is to bring Spanish-speaking children and families, as well as Anglo-Saxon families, closer to our languages and cultures, through the reading of our books. The bookbus will make stops at community centers and schools in Spanish-speaking communities where readings and book sales will take place. Every year the truck will be intervened at each of its destination points as a way of leaving a memory of the tour.

This mural is a continuation of a series of paintings depicting her hometown's markets, where the canopies cast a vibrant pink light over vendors' goods. Oasis-like, Hernández's market offers a shift in perspective, where food is an expression of artistry. The focus of this piece is on the handmade signs created by vendors, which are informative and even humorous. Hernández merges the transactional elements of the signs with messages about family and the cultural importance of food in Mexico.
